Stepping Into Legal Interpreting is a Deaf-led foundation workshop designed for interpreters who are interested in legal work but are unsure where or how to begin.

This session offers a grounded orientation to legal interpreting across law enforcement, court, and other legal spaces. Rather than focusing on techniques or terminology, the workshop centers self-awareness, readiness, and ethical decision-making.

Participants will explore what to expect in legal settings, reflect on their own readiness, and gain practical guidance for beginning to navigate legal interpreting thoughtfully and responsibly.

The goal is not to rush interpreters into legal work. It is to help them understand what they are stepping into and identify their next steps.

CORE THEMES

  • What legal interpreting looks like across settings
  • What to expect in law enforcement and court environments
  • Self-awareness and readiness
  • Ethical responsibility and decision-making
  • How to begin without rushing
